About Multiple Intelligences
The theory of multiple intelligences was proposed by Howard Gardnerin his book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences published in 1983. Gardner proposed that there are specific conditions to be met, if we have to consider certain behavioral aspects as intelligences. He also identified 8 different abilities that met these conditions.
Education is not only about being literate it is also about the blossoming of one’s overall personality. This is one of the reasons why education is regarded as a lifelong process.
While school-going children are at their receptive best as individuals, an education system that does not make room for fun while learning, turns it into a monotonous routine. To overcome this familiar trap, children should be encouraged to pursue and develop multiple intelligences.
This pursuit is extra-academic as curricula do not feature such programs. However, these programs are known to assist learning hence their contribution to academics is indirect. As a result, MIP sessions are typically planned as weekend activities.
There are 8 different intelligences possessed by human beings. These are:
- Linguistic intelligence – being smart with words
- Logical-mathematical intelligence – being smart with number/reasoning
- Spatial intelligence – being smart with pictures & images
- Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence – being smart in using the body
- Musical intelligence – being smart with the use of music
- Interpersonal intelligence – being able to interact smartly with other people
- Intrapersonal intelligence – being able to manage oneself well
- Naturalist intelligence – being smart in dealing with nature
Most formal education systems concentrate on the first 2 types, while major contributions have been made by people who have displayed phenomenal strength in intelligence of the remaining types. While this is changing, it is not changing rapidly enough, so both formal education and multiple intelligences have to be pursued equally till there is no dividing line.
There is something else. These intelligences appear to support one another. When the naturally endowed intelligences are allowed free expression, it improves the self-worth of the individual. Then the shortcomings in the other departments do not matter. In fact, the individual devices ‘intelligent’ ways to support & strengthen these areas.
Beginning today, learn to dabble in pictures & images; believe in yourself while you bend your body around your purposes; hum and drum with your fingers; bump happily into people; sit down with yourself; be one with nature…. all in your own way because individuals are unique. Then, you will observe that language and math have improved!
